Zsa Zsa Gabor (/ˈʒɑːʒɑː ˈɡɑːbɔr, ɡəˈbɔr/ ZHAH-zhah gə-BOR; born February 6, 1917) is a Hungarian-born American socialite and actress who acted in supporting roles in movies, on Broadway, and occasionally on television.
She began her stage career in Vienna and was crowned Miss Hungary in 1936.^[1] She emigrated to the United States in 1941 and became a sought-after actress with "European flair and style", with a personality that "exuded charm and grace".^[2] Her first movie role was as supporting actress in Lovely to Look At. She later acted in We're Not Married! and played one of her few leading roles in Moulin Rouge (1952), directed by John Huston, who described her as a "creditable" actress.^[3] Besides her film and television appearances, she is best known for having nine husbands, including hotel magnate Conrad Hilton and actor George Sanders. She once stated, "Men have always liked me and I have always liked men. But I like a mannish man, a man who knows how to talk to and treat a woman – not just a man with muscles."^[4]

Gabor was born February 6, 1917^[5] in Budapest (then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire)^[5] as Sári Gábor (Gábor Sári pronounced [ɡaːbor ʃaːri] in Hungarian order). She is the middle of three daughters born to Vilmos Gábor (1884–1962), a soldier, and Jolie Gábor (née Tilleman; 1896–1997).^[6][7] Gabor was named after Sári Fedák, a popular Hungarian actress.^[8] Her elder sister Magda was a socialite and her younger sister Eva was an actress and businesswoman.
Gabor's mother, Jolie, was an aunt of Annette Lantos, wife of Hungarian-born U.S. congressman and Holocaust survivor, Tom Lantos.^[9][10] Jolie was Jewish^[10] and barely escaped Hungary after the Nazis occupied Budapest in 1944, crediting Magda's influential connections with rescuing her: "For Magda's Portuguese Ambassador [ Carlos Sampaio Garrido ] I thank God. It was this man who saved my life."^[11] Gabor's maternal grandmother and uncle Sebastian (Annette Lantos's father) chose to remain in Budapest feeling they "had a good place to hide". However, both died during an Allied bombing raid. The fate of Zsa Zsa's three maternal aunts, Jolie's sisters, remains unclear.^[11]


Conrad Hilton was born in San Antonio, New Mexico. His father, Augustus Halvorsen Hilton, was an immigrant from Norway and his Catholic mother, Mary Genevieve (née Laufersweiler), was an American of German descent. Hilton grew up with seven siblings: Felice A. Hilton, Eva C. Hilton, Carl H. Hilton, Julian Hilton (died in infancy), Rosemary J. Hilton, August H. Hilton and Helen A. Hilton. The Hilton name comes from the farm Hilton in Kløfta, Norway, where Conrad's father was born.
Hilton attended the Goss military (New Mexico Military Institute), and St. Michael's College (now Santa Fe University of Art and Design), and the New Mexico School of Mines (now New Mexico Tech). He was a member of the international fraternity Tau Kappa Epsilon. In his early twenties, Hilton was a Republican representative in the first New Mexico Legislature, when the state was newly formed. He served two years in the U.S. Army during World War I. His father was killed in a car accident while he was serving in the Army in France.^[1]

The most enduring influence to shape Hilton's philanthropic philosophy beyond that of his parents was the Roman Catholic Church and his sisters. He credited his mother with guiding him to prayer and the church whenever he was troubled or dismayed — from the boyhood loss of a beloved pony to severe financial losses during the Great Depression. His mother continually reminded him that prayer was the best investment he would ever make.^[1]
